For our treatment we also have to think about the setting in which our video will be shot. There are two different aspects of the video which we have to think of; the performance and the narrative. With the performance we want it to be very simple and naturalistic we want it to follow conventions of indie and have a low budget stage/performance area. To try and create that minimalistic vibe our stage will just be a raised platform rather than a big stage which you would see at big festivals for pop and rock bands. The performance setting will have guitars, drums, keyboard and microphones with an emphasis on the idea they are performing. We decided on 4 band members all of which won’t be fully conventional, we will have a female drummer which isn’t common and challenges stereotypical ideas that all drummers and rock musicians are male.   The settings for our narrative will be slightly more complex, it’s common to see flashbacks in indie music videos and we really like the idea of using flashbacks. Therefore we want to have the happy flashbacks which we have decided will be in a happy setting for example a beach; specifically the seafront. Also happy memories in normal, common places like walking down roads, woodlands; taking the dog for walks.  For the flashbacks of the darker, harder times for example we were thinking of using a hospital/doctor type setting to represent the difficult with the relationships and the deterioration of the girl’s mental state, suggesting she may have a mental illness.  By Abbie

For the performance aspect of our music video we have decided that we will be using a small 4 person band, the costumes for each band member will be very similar but they will differ slightly. The main theme for the costumes of the band are jeans, dark tops with flannel shirts over the top. The lead singer will differ slightly in colour in attempt to draw more attention to him and to showcase that he is the more important band member. We want our band to look conventional of the indie genre but still modern, we chose these minimalistic costumes to try an achieve this.

For the narrative aspect of our music video, we will be having 2 characters which are a couple. The male will be wearing casual clothing which fits in with the style of the current fashion, resulting in a closer connection being formed with the male target audience. The overall look of the male character is going to be modern but muted, due to the actor being a tall, pale and thin brunette we feel as if this look would really suit him and tie in with the indie genre. For the female character, we want her to look very unique enabling the audience to understand the males attration to her. She will be styled in mom jeans, doc martins and a muted coloured shirt and jacket, we have chosen this style because we want her to subtly look vulnerable to fit in with our narrative but we also want her to look attractive. The muted colours and oversized jackets are very conventional of the indie genre and also are very fashionable currently.  Danielle

Lighting;

Performance

In the performance part of the music video we intend to have the members on a small stage/ low platform in a minimalistic room. For the lighting we want to use a mixture of spot lights and stage washes for the stage area, the spot lights are going to be used to introduce each band member and as the song introduce there instrument they will be illuminated using an individual spot light . When the song starts to pick up we will use a stage wash to illuminate the whole band a merging them together instead of individual spotlights. The lights we will use to do this are some source 4 spot lights to do the individual spot lights.

For the stage wash we will use a industry standard theatre light called a Fresnel which comes with barn doors allowing the light to be narrowed down onto our small stage/platform to give a more realistic performance environment. These  light will be mounted behind and above the camera to make the angles and position of them correct for a performance area and also so there is a full coverage of light on the individual band members, these lights are a older style light as they are halogen light bulbs instead of the modern day 21st century  LED lighting. These lights will produce a warm white light (golden white) which is the stereotypical light colour for a minimalistic, indie/pop  artist stage lighting, we are also having this colour to give a warm and closeness felling to the performance element, the colour is made possible by using the old style of halogen lighting. Contributing to this lighting we potentially are going to have a row of lights behind the band point out towards the crowed to give the representation of the performance element and to make it more realistic for the viewer that they’re performing on a stage. For this we will use either use old fashioned par 56’s halogen par can with long noses on these will produce a warm white colour the same as the spots and Fresnel’s, however with these lights we have the potential to change the colour using a coloured plastic filter called a gel. If we are uable to use the Par 56’s we will use the modern day equivalent which is a LED version which used DMX control to change the colour so which we can use to make a similar colour to the halogen Par 56’s or a different colour like we would using the gells. Below is a picture of the effect these lights would create, we intend to us different colour to what the picture shows. To run all the lighting we will have the use of a dimable circuit board so we can get the right intensity of light this will be controlled by a DMX unit. Below is a diagram of how it will all be connected up and the lights

Camera;

For the visual recording device we will be using a Cannon 700d as our main camera accompanied by a cannon 600d and a few canon legria HFr306 camcorders for any extra angles, Picture below of each camera.

The 2 DSLR cameras (cannon 600 and 700d) will have a standard lense of 18-55mm which will allow us to get a medium range wide angle to close shot. However we also have the use of a cannon 85-200mm lense for any extremely long distance shots as it allows us to get a more accurate long shot to what we want with the large zoom and we also have a 24mm cannon lense which will not allow us to do as wider shots as the standard lenses of the cameras but it will allow us to make certain objects stand out from the background more through the background becoming blurred but keeping the front object in perfect focus this lense will allow us to create a centre of attention around the object and also create more depth to the shots. Phots of each lense are below.

Sound;

For any exstra sound we decide to record to make fouley, voice overs and diegetic or non-diegetic sound we have the use of 2 different types of audio recording system. The first one will be the inbuilt audio recording system in the Cannon 600 and 700d camera with a rode video prom mic attached. The 2nd recording system is a variety of different microphones (benhringer c3 microphone, dynamic senheigser) which will be decided depending on what needs recording. These will be connected to a Yamaha usb mixing desk, this allows us to change the eq and add effects to what we want to recording before we use the built in USB interference to connect it to a laptop and use Cubase sound recording software to record the sound.

Narrative;

For the Narrative we intend to use different lighting  based on the location and acting taking place, we intend to use high key and low key lighting to create different representations. We intend to use high key lighting in places like happy memories/moments  however we also may use it as a way to represent the mental illness of the female actress in the video.  We then intend to use low key lighting in the more down beat and sad scenes to contradict the high key lighting representing  a positive and happy atmosphere.  To create these lighting affects we will use the lighting from the performance part of the music video however changing angles and positions to manipulate the use of shadows and when making the lighting more naturalistic. We will also use the Dimable circuit to match the lighting to the atmosphere we are trying to create.

We decided with our treatment to make some notes on it all together and discuss idea’s to see what we can come up with. We find that mind maps work well for our group because it means we are able to develop our ideas further and we are able to be creative with them and it’s not in such a structured form.  After making notes about it we decided to separate up the treatment so all 4 of us had a go at writing a section of it.

Tom was given the responsibility of the Props in the treatment. Below is a link to tom's props page.
