Audience research
After choosing the genre pop indie we went about trying to find a band which we all liked and who also was unsigned. As our groups homework we all went away and looked for 3 songs that we liked; mainly using the websites daily unsigned and YouTube. After listening to all the songs we had chosen we narrowed it down to three that as a group we agreed we could create a music video for. We decided on the songs ‘stereo’ by Mike Mains and the Branches (my choice), ‘Seafret’ by Atlantis which Danielle found, lastly ‘You and your lasso’ by The 99s which Jamie researched. Our target audience is going to be 15-19 year olds therefore we decided to play the three songs to a group of students similar to the age of our target audience and see what their opinions were on the song. This was editied by me and danielle.
It came back that our target audience liked ‘stereo’ by Mike Mains and the Branches and ‘Seafret’ by Atlantis so we went away and thought of ideas for the video; costumes, setting, narrative ideas and camerawork. We then found ourselves stuck because me and tom really liked Stereo and Danielle and Jamie really liked Seafret. We decided to pitch our ideas to one another to try and make a decision about which one we preferred. After lots of discussion we came to the conclusion that we could create a really good, alternative video for Seafret.
After deciding to do the Seafret song by Atlantis we decided we wanted to do some more research into what our target audience thought of our song. Because we were using a song that already has a music video; our video had to be something totally different with different representational issues. We decided to make a questionnaire to research what people opinions were of the song and because we wanted to get as much feedback as we could we made some of the questions closed ended questions and some open answered questions. Last year we did questionnaires on paper and handed them out but this year we decided to do them online as often this means we will get more responses and better quality of feedback. We used the site ‘free online survey’ which was very useful in us being able to make the questionnaire and publish it; it also assisted us in the terms that it made pie charts for us. Pie charts are a great way to compare and evaluate data and for our closed answer questions it allowed us to view the responses to the questions easily and quickly.

Overall we got some very good feedback and some really helpful feedback. We also got some feedback which we hadn’t thought about but we think is a really good and some of the ideas we could use in our video.

With this question about narrative a lot of people said they thought the narrative could be about relationships, sadness or maybe a journey. We had a couple of responses we thought were out of the box; someone mentioned the narrative being about regretfulness which would be a really interesting topic to base the narrative on but we believe doing such a topic would be hard to portray in a music video.

These were our closed ended questions; we decided to evaluate this data in terms of pie chart because then it’s easier to evaluate and read.

The fact that 97% of our audience watched the video is a good sign that they are answering the rest of the survey with knowledge of what they are analysing. The 3% (one person) that didn’t could be an anomaly because in all the questions there is one answer which is odd, out of place and useless; therefore it probably the same individual.
Our next question is do you think the song fits the indie pop/rock genre; this was another one of our closed ended questions. 77% of our answers came back as yes which is a positive statistic, although 7 people said it didn’t. the only reason we can think of that why we got 23% of no’s was because most of the people who filled in the survey have no media background therefore they may not fully understand the conventions in which this song for fills under the indie genre.
The next question isn’t directly related to our research but we wanted to see what opinions people had of the song. The song has only had 8,770,656 views on YouTube so in relation to other big songs it hasn’t had that many views and therefore isn’t very well known. 77% people liked the song which is a positive considering how unpopular and low key the band is.
