Lip Syncing, what is it?

Lip syncing is used a lot in the music industry and is popular technique in many music videos; it’s also used when some artists perform live. Many artists and actors use lip syncing when producing adverts and films too. Lip syncing is a technique which involves the artist synchronising their lips to a pre-recorded track to give the perception that they are singing. Many well-known artists like Taylor swift have executed lip syncing perfectly, but many artists have executed the technique badly causing humiliation and collapse of their singing careers.

There are several reasons why artists decide to use lip syncing one of the main reasons is so when they produce there music videos they can do many different takes; this allows them to use many different settings, costumes and effects without having to move technical recording equipment and wearing out there vocals. It also means that the artist can focus on the performance and their perception in the video rather than how good there vocals are. The idea of lip syncing has saved many artists a great deal of time and money. After the shots have been filmed in the post production stage the pre-recorded track is placed on top of the shots to finish of the music video.

Within the music industry we also see lip syncing used greatly in live performances; for example guest artists on shows like Xfactor will often lip sync to their tracks so they can focus on the performance eg.. Their chorography. Lip syncing has caused a great deal of controversy in the industry because when people buy expensive tickets to gigs and live performances they expect it to be live and for the artist to be showing their talent, the fact the artists have used a pre-recorded track make some fans feel cheated/betrayed and in many cases artists have lost a great deal of their audience because of them using lip syncing and therefore not giving there following what they were promised.

Milli Vanilli were famous and in the 1990s there were a global big hit until they decided to use lip syncing when preforming live at a concert. This performance was the fall of their career, after being outed for using the lip sync there global career fell apart and they lost a great deal of money and lots the huge following which they had. This is an example of lip syncing going incredible wrong.

But there are many good example of were lip syncing has been used for humour and been used well. The TV programme ‘Lip Sync Battle’ started out in the US with stars like Mike Tyson, Justin Bieber and Iggy Azalea taking part in lip syncing to their faviroute songs. After being so successful in the US the programme moved to the UK where its success and attraction grew. This is an example of good lip syncing and using lip syncing for humour.
