Record Labels
Creation records are an independent British record label, founded in 1983. It was formed by Alan McGee, Dick Green and Joe Foster; when McGee formed the record label his aim was to provide an outlet for like-minded musicians and to give an opportunity for young bands to see their own work on vinyl. But in the end they ended up signing famous artists like Oasis and Velvet crush. They mainly signed artists which were of the rock and indie genre although they did sign a couple of artists of the punk genre. Following an unsuccessful attempt to run an offshoot label for Warner Brothers (Elevation Records), McGee regrouped Creation and immersed himself in the burgeoning dance and acid house scene starting in the late 1980s. Creation was then sold to Sony music in 1992; this was when the company signed oasis and produced there debut album Definitely Maybe, which later came on to be a hug commercial success. The label released its final album (from XTRMNTR) in December 1999; this was due to McGee starting to suffer from burnout.
Universal music group who are also known as UMG recordings, Inc. Is an American-French based worldwide music corporation that currently operates a subsidiary of the French media conglomerate Vivendi. It’s a very good and popular media company which is part of Universal; a big media conglomerate which also deals with film production, distribution and marketing. The record label has signed big artist like Ellie Goulding and The Rolling Stones. Universal is worldwide recognised name; through producing films like the fast and furious series and Les Miserables. Being a household name helps create familiarity for the audience and it also attracts the audience because having an artist with such a big company behind them means they must be good. Universal music groups main aim is to a mass audience, especially online users and users of social media which in this technological age is most of the population.
Forefront records is a contemporary American record label who mainly focus on contemporary Christian music. It was founded in 1987. Unlike many other record labels they appeal to a niche audience how are solely focused of the message and talent of an artist; they don’t like to create an artist. The label mainly funds products like compilation cd’s rather than big tours and advertising campaigns. It’s very rare to have a record company holey focusing on religious music; this attracts but also repeals audiences.
If we were to find a record label for our song I think we would have to go with a record label which signs mainly indie bands. Virgin Records I believe would be the best record label to sign our song because of their wealth and also they open mind to take a risk with indie artists. Virgin Records is owned by the media giant Richard Branson who owns an empire worth more than 5.5 billion dollars; this means the production of record will be done with the best technology and with a larger budget. It also will help attract a large audience because of how virgin is such a big company and such a well know company. Currently they are signing popular indie artist like Bastille, Ella Eyre and Walking on Cars.
