With this music video analyse I decided to try something different, I got my iPhone 6 and got my friend Daisy to record me as I was writing up my notes on the tom Odell song another love. I then using Air drop moved the videos over to my MacBook Air. I then used iMovie to edit the film, I increased the speed of it to make sure it didn't get boring. I then added the song in the background to just make the video a bit more exciting.

Another Love - Tom Odell

In terms of editing the video is very discrete, although it is obvious that there has been some post production editing. There has been made filters used in video; to start of there’s a very blue filter over the top, this fades out as we get through the video and as we get to the 2 minute mark there is no filter; then the shot is made very crisp colour wise. Gradually getting more and more red; this is as the none verbal communication gets more angry; then at the end of the song the blue filter is reapplied. This change in filters helps portray the change in mood; the mood ups tempo therefore the colour blue which is normally associated with fear and sadness changes to this red which connotes anger. Ending with the same filter as they started with helps the video to look together and aids the audience understanding of how Tom has gone through emotions; just to end up at the same place where he started. There is also a blurred filter around him; representing that life is a blur sometimes, things move and carry on around you. This representation of understanding makes tom seem relatable and this can increase his audience.

There is many different camera angels used in this music video, many of them centred around Tom. There are many close up shots of Tom all the way through the video; these really betray Tom’s emotion. We can see how emotive he is about his music and about how passionate the topic of love is to him, making him attractive to the audience because he’s seen to be in touch with his emotions. Stereotypically boys are seen to be detached from there emotions, Tom breaking this stereotype will increase the number of his female audience because he’s relatable to them and different. There was also a close up- pan shot at the beginning; using this as an establishing shot represents the artist to the audience straight away. Putting a face to the song can help the audience be more active; they start to feel emotions for the artists, e.g sadness and this may make them feel sorry for Tom. Lastly there is a loads of mid shots of Tom sitting in the chair, this allows the audience to see whats going on around him and this makes the narrative of the song and the meaning behind the song more clear. We are also able to see the body language of the women around him and his reaction to her. We see her shout at him and his reaction of being hostile back, not being violent or angry at her; just taking it. This mid shot could be relatable to different people who have had a turbulent relationship; this then builds the audience fondness and understanding of the song and its meaning.

In terms of theory the video relates strongly to Tzventan Todorov’s theory of narrative. He believes there are 5 stages of narrative; going from equilibrium to disequilibrium back to an altered equilibrium. During this video we go from equilibrium of the relationship, then we go to disruption; although we don't quite know what it is the body language of the female changes, along with the tempo of the song and the filter changes colour. There’s some conflict were we see the camera judder and shake and the filter become red, then that all ends and we finish with a similar shot to what we started with; therefore this is the new equilibrium.
